PtX Development Fund Webinar

To inform its interested Indian private and public companies about the current funding opportunities, KfW in collaboration with the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF-SO) invites you to the upcoming webinar on “PtX Development Fund - Closing the financing gaps in PtX projects”.

Monday, 11 December 2023, 15:00 – 16:30 hrs IST/ 10:30 – 12:00 hrs CET : “PtX Development Fund – Closing the financing gaps in PtX projects”

Germany has committed itself to becoming climate neutral by 2045 - and to supporting other countries in their climate goals. Alongside renewable energies and energy efficiency, green hydrogen and its derivatives as an energy carrier are the third pillar of the energy transition. The basis for this is Power-to-X (PtX), i.e. the conversion of energy from renewable sources (such as hydro, solar and wind energy) into the gaseous energy carrier hydrogen and its derivatives.

The German government is therefore promoting the global market ramp-up of PtX in India and six other partner countries with its PtX Development Fund. The aim of the PtX Development Fund is to support the establishment of local value chains and the use of green hydrogen and its derivatives and to enable their connection to a technology of the future.

On behalf of the German Government, funding in the range of EUR 30 million (grant funds) is provided for projects along the entire PtX value chain: from the generation of green electricity through renewable energies to the production and transport of green hydrogen and derivatives. The aim is to promote capital-intensive PtX projects that are not yet "bankable" in an “as uncomplicated way as possible” and thus close the existing financing gaps.

Technical Web Seminar „Flexible Operation of Thermal Power Plants”

Web Seminar: Indo-German Energy Forum – New Flexibility Projects Started

On 29th October 2020, starting 2:30 – 5:00 pm IST / 10:00 – 12:30 am CET the Technical Web Seminar „Flexible Operation of Thermal Power Plants” will take place.

Wind- and solar-based variable power generation is increasing worldwide. For the efficient integration of these energy sources flexibility in the energy system is needed. Dispatchable generation is currently the most important flexibility option worldwide. Especially in India, coal-fired power plants form the majority of dispatchable generation. Faster ramp rates and stable minimum load operation enable coal-fired power plants to adapt to the new energy mix.

The flexible operation of coal-fired power plants has become a key topic of the Indo-German Energy Forum. After successful flexibility test runs at NTPC’s Dadri power plant a team of Indian and German experts is now working on two additional test series: at the Andal and Maithon power plant. The Andal power plant is located in the state of West Bengal and is operated by Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) – unit 2 with a capacity of 500 MW is selected for the test runs. The nearby Maithon power plant in Jharkhand state is operated by a joint venture of TataPower and DVC. The investigations also focus on unit 2 with 525 MW. The web seminar will introduce the new projects and provide insights into experiences in flexible power plant operation in India and Europe (including Turkey).

Everyone is kindly invited to participate in the web seminar on “Flexible operation of coal fired powered plants” on Thursday, 29th October 2020 from 2:30 – 5:00 pm IST / 10:00 – 12:30 am CET or share the invitation with operators interested in the topic.

Online Event: CO2-neutral Battery Manufacturing in Europe

The topic of this online seminar will consequently be to discuss the chances for European players and industry segments to still enter these supply chains due to e.g. missing infrastructure and local production facilities of the established competitors as well as open technology fields. Moreover, a focus point of the presentation will be to show P3’s view on success factors and road blocks for new entrants in the battery cell manufacturing business to participate and compete with the dominant market players. In this context the depth of vertical integration into the value chain of battery cell production will be most of interest as it defines the amount of potential chances and risks.

These aspects will also be discussed with regards to location-based advantages of the European industry. Among other points the availability of CO2 friendly energy grids, resulting in beneficial CO2 friendly component and raw material production will be considered. In view of the initial motivation of setting CO2 targets for the automotive industry this specific characteristic of the European location is a focus of this presentation to raise the argument of well to wheel CO2 implications.

Online Training on Renewable Energy Grid Integration through Hydro Pumped Storage

Government of India has set an ambitious target for the increase of renewable energy generation and has set a target of 175GW by 2022 comprising 100GW of Solar, 60GW of Wind, 10GW from small hydro and 5GW from Biomass energy. Generation from wind and solar has increased substantially during past few years and forms a significant proportion of the total generation in the grid. Wind and solar however, have fluctuating generation capacities. Integrating a significantly increasing amount of wind and solar facilities into the electricity supply system requires balancing strategies and storage options. Developing pumped storage particularly in the areas with concentrated wind and solar generation, would significantly improve the grid reliability. Moreover, pumped storage developments have the  availability to spinn reserve at little to no costs,  regulating frequency to meet sudden load changes in the network. Voltage and power factor correction are additional benefits of Pumped Storage Schemes when Pumped storage plants (PSP) operate in a voltage regulation mode like a synchronous condenser and can reduce losses as well as maintain the quality of service to the consumers.

The objectives of the online training are to get insights into the economic viable operation and gain knowledge on role of PSP for Renewable Energy Grid Intergration in India.

The training program is open to various utilities and industry organisations/individuals  in the field of power system.

The Heat is on: Solar Heat Potential in India, Online Workshop

In 2019 solar heat capacity additions reached 251MW around the world but only 2MW were installed in India. Its industrial sectors account for more than 50% of the country’s energy needs and a lot of these energy sources must be imported, either as oil, gas or high-quality coal. However, many industries in India use only low to medium temperatures of below 400 °C, which SHIP (or CSH) can easily provide. In this online workshop, some of the most experienced experts and industry executives will share their experiences on the SHIP market in the India and the findings of the Solar Payback project:

  • Assess the size of the opportunity for Solar heat in India, considering its energy need for industrial heat, the growth of renewables going forward, and the policies that are driving this technology forward

Webinar on “Future of Distributed Home Storage Systems in India”

Home storage systems are essential to manage the power quality, reliability and energy access in rural areas. It is becoming a necessary system across the globe, including USA, Germany, Australia, China and India. With the shift in technology, Li-ion technology is widely accepted around the world. But in many remote areas including India and African counties lead acid and advanced lead acid batteries are used. With low cost of Solar PV & energy storage system has made the combination as a preferred choice for consumers. In Germany 200,000+ Home energy storage systems are sold and 65,000 systems sold with Solar PV. In US, the combination of the home storage system and Solar is eligible for 26% tax rebate. The Australian government also provides subsidy levels of $300 per kWh and $400 per kWh and the maximum subsidy of $4,000 for the home storage system. Globally, BYD, Tesla, Sonnen, Lg Chem are the leading players in this space.

India, predominantly uses lead acid battery for urban households back up. But with the cost reduction of Li-Ion battery, various companies tried to launch home energy storage systems. With higher adoption of rooftop solar, Solar+ energy storage system are evolving as an alternate solution for power back-ups in urban locality. Gradually, India might see a shift to grid-independent systems in coming years, and storage systems such as solar-plus-storage will see a significant boost in the market. It will also be likely to be a boom in the rural or off-grid solar + energy storage systems. There is no specific subsidy scheme by the government for home storage systems or Solar+ storage systems. But through the Saubhagya scheme, the government is trying to provide Solar+ Li-Ion battery system in remote areas for energy access. IESA estimates a potential of 8 -10 GWh for next 7 years for India.

We are happy to invite you to join IGEF - IESA open webinar on 26th May 2020 | 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM IST. In the webinar, experts will highlight global and India market updates and future potential for distributed home storage systems.
