Knowledge Session: Large Scale Green Hydrogen Production

On 14 July 2021, the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC) in collaboration with the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF) and VDMA jointly organized a virtual knowledge session on “Large Scale Green Hydrogen Production”. Dr. Nicole Glanemann, Deputy Head of the Division for Bilateral Energy Cooperation of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and Mr. Stefan Halusa, Director General, IGCC inaugurated the session. Distinguished experts from Siemens Energy and thyssenkrupp presented various aspects of large scale green hydrogen production technologies. The knowledge session was moderated by Mr. Tobias Winter, Director of the Indo-German Energy Forum Support Office.

VDMA pointed out that it is foreseen that by 2030 the levelized cost of green hydrogen (LCOH2) can reach 1 $/kg in India. In 2050 the LCOH2 could reacht 0.40-0.59 $/kg explained Mr. Peter Müller-Baum and Mr. Rajesh Nath (VDMA). This is what motivates dozens of members participating in the VDMA platform for hydrogen and other Power-to-X technologies. Mr. Chirag K Shah (Siemens Energy) presented PEM electrolyser technology as a flexible, efficient and scalable solution for large hydrogen production. Thyssenkrupp demonstrated large scale modular Alkaline Water Electrolysis technology for green hydrogen plants. Mr. Jai Prakash Soni (thyssenkrupp) reported of its advancements in the construction of a multi-GW alkaline electrolyser facility in Middle East. The presentations were followed by a lively discussion based on questions from the audience. Amongst others, potential future offtake markets, the potential for India to also export green hydrogen, perspectives of green hydrogen in the mobility sector and for storage applications were discussed. The session was attended by more than 350 participants.
