Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) 2021

Between 16-17 March, the virtual Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) took place. The BETD has become a leading international forum for key stakeholders of the energy sector. High-level policymakers, industry, science and civil society are given the opportunity to share their experiences and ideas on a safe, affordable and environmentally responsible global energy transition. Over 2,000 participants from more than 90 countries, 50 foreign and energy ministers and state secretaries, and over 100 high-level speakers participated in the hybrid event in Berlin this year.

Secretary Alok Kumar of the Indian Ministry of Power (MoP) and Co-Chair of the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF) participated at the event “The Green Decade – Road to 2030” on 16 March. He pointed out that India is committed to reaching its emission reduction targets and to build 450 GW capacity of renewable energies until 2030. In this context, regional and international cooperation is imperative.

A side event on 15 March “Is coal coming to an end? – Structural changes for a decarbonized future” was organized by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). Representatives from yet coal-dependent countries discussed the different possible options of reducing the role of coal in the energy systems against the background of the benefits and challenges associated with this transition. From Germany, State Secretary Andreas Feicht and Mr. Ulrich Benterbusch (BMWi) participated alongside India’s Deputy Permanent Secretary Mr. Vivek Dewangan of the MoP.
