On November 24, 2021, the Indo-German Energy Forum and Indo-German Chamber of Commerce jointly organized a virtual Knowledge Session on the topic of "Certification of Green Hydrogen". The developments along the whole value chain of green hydrogen production in India and Europe are moving at an advanced pace and especially the import and export requirements of green hydrogen are widely discussed in both markets. In particular, actors in the hydrogen segment are interested in certification schemes to ensure hydrtogen-importing countries that their product is sustainable. Dedicated experts from Guidehouse, Tuev Sued Energietechnik and the European Energy Exchange (EEX) shared their insights into the state of art and further evolution of green hydrogen certification in the European Union.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Nicole Glanemann, Deputy Head at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), Government of Germany. Dr. Glanemann emphasized Germany's growing interest in importing the green fuel and consequently, the need for a transparent certification system. Mr. Jan Cihlar from Guidehouse gave the first presentation on "Sustainability Criteria for Green Hydrogen" and talked about the European certification framework. He provided participants with an overview of the European Commission's Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II), and explained the three cases into which a supplementary article of RED II differentiates for green hydrogen production. Ms. Paula Maria Auer-Saupe, Tuev Sued Energietechnik, continued with a presentation on "Certification systems for green hydrogen and its importance for a sustainable future". She explained the importance of the production of green hydrogen in the context of climate protection and emphasized the leading role of the European Union in the regulation of hydrogen from renewable sources. However, due to the article of RED II that will be supplemented in the future, a common methodology with detailed regulations is needed to steer existing and future certification systems. With regard to the trading of green hydrogen in Europe, Ms. Miriam Brandes, European Energy Exchange (EEX), offfered participants a thorough understanding regarding the opportunities and requirements associated with trading. Among other things, she explained the relevance of a level playing field for producers and consumers as well as the relevance of certification systems as trustworthy proof of the origin of green hydrogen. After the informative presentations, a lively Q&A session with many questions from the audience concluded the event. Overall, the webinar was very well attended with over 150 participants.
