Conventional Power Plants

Flexibilization of fossil fuel based power plants to adapt to fluctuating renewable energy generation is a key focus for the thermal power sector in India. European Energy company Uniper aims to support the Indian power sector in an effective transition. IGEF organized a roundtable on ‘Future Business for Conventional Power Plants’ on 13 September 2017 at the German Embassy in India.

Flexibilization of fossil fuel based power plants has emerged as one of the key focus areas for the thermal power sector in India and Uniper, one of Europe’s leading Energy companies, aims to support the Indian power sector to make an effective transition. The Indo-German Energy Forum organized a roundtable on ‘Future Business for Conventional Power Plants’ on 13th September at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in India. Mr. Eckhardt Rümmler, Chief Operating Officer of Uniper presided over the discussion together with Mr. O.P. Maken, CEO, Excellence Enhancement Centre (EEC) for Indian Power Sector together with representatives of NTPC, BHEL, TERI, CEA, Indo-German Energy Programme in GIZ and German Embassy amongst others.

Mr. Rümmler stated that “going forward with the Indian government’s goal of 175GW installed capacity of renewable energies by 2022, means that flexible operation of conventional power plants will constitute an important role in India’s energy future and hence Uniper’s future business strategy”. Mr. O.P. Maken, CEO, Excellence Enhancement Centre for Indian Power Sector said that “Flexibilization needs immediate attention in India and we look forward to work jointly with Uniper to resolve relevant issues for further strengthening Indian Power Sector”. The event was jointly organized by the Excellence Enhancement Centre for Indian Power Sector (EEC), Uniper India Power Services, and the Indo-German Energy Forum Support Office followed by a networking lunch.

Uniper India Power Services was found about one year ago, as a joint venture (JV) between Uniper and India Power Corporation Limited (IPCL) to develop and service the utility sector in India. The JV has already taken over the responsibility for operating 300MW and is participating in various tenders/discussions for operations and maintenance, engineering, benchmarking and ACM tenders with leading power generating companies in India., who advise the government on policy matters, grid operating companies, and members of the GIZ India Energy Team.
