IGEF Subgroup I meeting on “Efficiency Enhancement in Fossil Fuel Based Power Plants” to adapt to fluctuating renewables

On April 19th, 2018 the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF)’s Subgroup I (SG1) - Efficiency Enhancement in Fossil Fuel Based Power Plants meeting was held at the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) in Berlin. The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Aniruddha Kumar, Joint Secretary (Thermal), Ministry of Power (MoP), Government of India and Mr. Wolfdieter Böhler, Head of Division, Bilateral Cooperation, Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), Government of Germany. Further participants were representatives from NTPC, VGB and GIZ. Main topic of the meeting was the on-going and future Indian-German cooperation within IGEF’s Task Force Flexibility. The Flexibilisation of coal fired power plants to adapt to fluctuating renewable energy generation remains a priority relevant energy issue for the work of this subgroup. During the meeting further procedures for the preparation and execution of flexibility test runs at one NTPC power plant in India were discussed. Other important topics were the implementation of trainings to enhance operational practices of power plant operators and future regulation to assure economic viability for retrofitting of power plants together with subsequent flexible operation with less power sold to the grid.
